MCNC libraries

Libraries

MCNC is a proud provider of broadband, consulting, and technology services to North Carolina libraries and library systems. Citizens rely on these trusted community anchor institutions for traditional services such as books, research, and other media borrowing as well as providing computers with Internet access and places for citizens to gather for information and activities.

Reliable Broadband is Vital to the Success of NC Libraries

Services

With technology becoming more prevalent, services such as mobile printing, 3-D printing, podcast kits, and rentable Wi-Fi hotspots are becoming fundamental service offerings from local libraries.

As libraries incorporate more technology into their service offerings, high-speed, secure Internet access is a must — and it is one of the services that MCNC provides to libraries. All of MCNC’s service offerings such as an Internet connection to its backbone network (NCREN), security, consulting, data center, training and events, and collaboration are available to libraries. Libraries have access to the Internet2 network and resources through their connection with MCNC, which includes access to national digital resources via the Internet2 Community Anchor Program.

Statewide Collaboration

To ensure that libraries continue to receive services of vital importance to their patrons, MCNC engages with libraries and regularly connects with the State Librarian of North Carolina to discuss statewide broadband issues, technology, and other state and federal developments and priorities that impact the delivery of services to the libraries’ patrons.

MCNC and the State Librarian hosted a session at NCREN Community Day 2019 that was designed for the library community. The event incorporated speakers from Internet2 who shared information on services available to MCNC’s community anchor institutions. We are pleased to convene clients for engagement opportunities to learn how to participate and take full advantage of networking opportunities.

Access to the Internet2 Community

Library clients subscribed to MCNC’s Internet service have access to the Internet2 Community Anchor Program (CAP), which brings together Internet2 member institutions and innovators from K-12, public libraries, colleges and universities, healthcare facilities, museums, and other cultural and performing arts organizations to extend advanced networking, new technologies, content, and services across all educational sectors to improve people’s lives — no matter where they are located.

Visit the Internet2 CAP website to learn more and get involved.
