As part of MCNC’s statewide expansion enabled by grants from the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) and the Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative (GLRBI), MCNC connected several public service locations to its fiber backbone network, the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN).
MCNC provides transport services for North Carolina’s public safety communications centers scattered throughout the state to connect to the VIPER (Voice Interoperability Plan for Emergency Responders) system infrastructure via MCNC’s fiber backbone network. VIPER is a statewide 800 MHz radio system supporting more than 124,000 users with interoperable communications among public safety agencies as they respond to calls on a day-to-day basis or encounter unexpected emergencies and devastation.
In addition, the NC Department of Public Safety leverages MCNC’s services to establish backup connections between servers at the Western Data Center in Rosman and the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) Joint Forces Headquarters Data Center in Raleigh.
A secure customized client portal is provided to Public Safety clients that receive service from MCNC. The personalized space is exclusive to the agency, editable only by restricted public safety and MCNC personnel and includes the latest network and technical support information.
